What it is
Body doubling is doing a task in the silent presence of another person who is also doing their own thing. They don't help, don't talk much, don't keep you accountable in any heavy way. They are just there.
For reasons no one fully understands but every ADHD person recognises, this often unlocks tasks that have been stuck for weeks.
When to use it
- You've been avoiding a specific task for so long it has become a Thing
- Boring admin (taxes, forms, calls) where the activation energy is the whole problem
- Tasks you can do but never seem to start when alone
- When the apartment is silent and the silence itself is somehow paralysing
How to do it
You have options, in roughly increasing cost:
- Free, async, anyone: Ask a friend on a video call. You both mute. You both work on your own things. 50 minutes. You're not chatting. You're just co-existing.
- Free, scheduled, stranger: Focusmate. Books you with a stranger for 25 or 50 minutes. You each say what you're working on, then mute and work. Surprisingly effective. Three free sessions per week.
- Free, ambient: Cafés, libraries, coworking spaces. The point isn't conversation. It's the soft pressure of other humans doing things nearby.
- Paid: Coaching platforms like Shimmer, or scheduled coworking apps like Flow Club.
An example
I had to submit an insurance claim that involved a phone call. I had been avoiding it for eleven weeks. Eleven.
I booked a Focusmate session, told the stranger "I'm going to make a horrible phone call," they said "good luck, I'm writing a brief," we muted, and I made the call inside the first eight minutes. Eleven weeks of dread, dispatched in eight minutes, because someone else was there.
The stranger didn't help. They didn't need to. Their presence was the help.
When this fails
- The other person is too engaging. If they're chatty, it becomes a hangout, not body doubling. Pick the right person or use a structured platform.
- You pick the wrong task. Body doubling is for activation energy problems, not capability problems. If the task is hard because it's actually hard, a body double won't fix that. It'll just mean you're confused in company.
- You expect it to feel productive every time. Sometimes the session just helps you tidy your desk. That still counts. The muscle you're building is "I can sit and do a thing," not "I crushed it."
Try it this week
Book one Focusmate session. Pick the smallest avoided task you can think of. Tell the stranger what it is. Do it. See what happens.
If you don't want to talk to a stranger, ask a friend who also has stuff to do. The mechanic is the same.
