Pre-Task Rituals

A short, repeated sequence that tells your brain "we're working now."

What it is

A pre-task ritual is a tiny, fixed sequence of actions you do every time before starting focused work. Same actions, same order, every time. Over weeks, your brain starts treating the ritual itself as a cue: "oh, we're working now."

Athletes use these (the basketball player who bounces the ball three times before every free throw). It works for desk work too.

When to use it

  • You sit down at your desk and immediately open six unrelated things
  • You can't tell when you've started working and when you're just hovering
  • Deep work is hard to access. You need to "get into it" for a while
  • You're trying to build a writing/coding/practice habit

How to do it

The ritual itself doesn't matter. The consistency does. Pick 3 to 5 short actions. Examples:

  1. Boil the kettle
  2. Close every tab that isn't this task
  3. Put on the same playlist (instrumental, no lyrics, ideally boring)
  4. Write one sentence about what you're trying to do
  5. Set a 25-minute timer

Same actions. Same order. Every time.

An example

My ritual for writing:

  1. Make a coffee (no phone in the kitchen)
  2. Open the document
  3. Re-read the last paragraph I wrote
  4. Type the first sentence of where I'm going next (even if it's terrible)
  5. Start the timer

After about three weeks, step 1 alone started making me feel like I was about to write. Coffee became a writing cue. The ritual was doing the work my motivation couldn't.

When this fails

  • You change the ritual constantly. The whole point is the repetition. If you keep tweaking, your brain never gets the cue.
  • The ritual is too long. Five minutes max. If it's a 20-minute setup, you'll skip it on bad days, and the bad days are when you needed it most.
  • You skip steps "just this once." Don't. The reliability is the magic.

Try it this week

Pick one type of focused task you do regularly (writing, coding, deep reading, whatever). Design a 3-step ritual. Do it for one week, exactly the same way. Notice if step 1 starts to feel like the work.
