Anchor Habits

Bolt a new habit onto something you already do without thinking.

What it is

An anchor habit is something you already do reliably every day. Making coffee, brushing your teeth, locking the door, sitting down at your desk. You take this already-automatic action and bolt a new habit onto it: the second after the anchor, you do the new thing.

The anchor does the remembering for you. That's the whole trick.

When to use it

  • You keep trying to build a habit but forget to do it
  • A new behaviour is small enough that motivation isn't the issue. Recall is
  • You want a habit to "feel automatic" without willpower
  • You're starting medication and need to remember to take it

How to do it

  1. Pick an existing reliable action. Not "when I have time." Something physical and daily that you don't skip.
  2. Pick a small new habit. It must be small. "Do 50 push-ups" won't anchor. "do one push-up" will. You can scale up later.
  3. Stack them, immediately. "After I [anchor], I will [new habit]."
  4. Don't pile on. One new habit per anchor. Multiple stacks is how it falls apart.

An example

I had been forgetting to take my vitamin D for years. Tried every approach: alarms, pill organisers, putting the bottle on my pillow. Forgot anyway.

Anchored it to: "After the coffee finishes brewing, I take vitamin D." I had to drink coffee to function in the morning. The coffee was never forgotten. Put the bottle next to the coffee machine.

Two years on, I haven't missed a dose. The coffee machine became the vitamin D reminder.

When this fails

  • You picked the wrong anchor. "When I open my laptop" sounds reliable but you open the laptop in five different contexts. Pick an anchor with one context: the coffee machine, the front door, brushing teeth.
  • The new habit is too big. Anchors carry small habits, not 30-minute ones. Start tiny, expand only once it's automatic.
  • You break the chain on travel/weekends. Anchor habits depend on the anchor still happening. If you don't make coffee on weekends, the habit dies on weekends.

Try it this week

Pick one tiny habit you've been failing to start. Identify a reliable daily anchor. Write down: "After I [anchor], I [new habit]." Do it for a week. Notice whether it sticks better than your previous attempts.
