The Boring Soundtrack

Same playlist, every focus session. Boring on purpose. Your brain stops listening and starts working.

What it is

A boring soundtrack is one specific instrumental playlist (or single album, or single track on loop) that you play only during focused work. Always the same one. No lyrics. No surprises.

It does two things at once: it masks ambient noise enough to stop your brain darting at distractions, and it becomes a Pavlovian focus cue. Hear it, and your brain starts shifting gears toward work.

When to use it

  • You can't focus in silence (your brain finds its own distractions)
  • You can't focus with normal music (lyrics hijack attention, songs change too much)
  • Coffee shops work but you can't always be in one
  • You want a quick, repeatable cue to enter focus mode

How to do it

  1. Pick one piece of music that is musically boring in a good way. Long, instrumental, repetitive, no sudden changes. Examples that work for many ADHD brains: lo-fi beats, ambient drone, Brian Eno's Music for Airports, video game soundtracks (Stardew Valley, Minecraft), white/brown noise, certain study-music YouTube channels.
  2. Use the same one every time. The "boring" part needs to actually be boring. If you keep finding new playlists, the novelty hijacks the focus.
  3. Use headphones if you can. The point is to seal the environment, not to listen.

An example

I worked at home with a noisy neighbour above me for two years. I tried silence (couldn't focus), normal music (sang along), and white noise (made me sleepy).

What worked: a 90-minute lo-fi mix on loop. Same one. I now associate that mix so strongly with writing that hearing the first 10 seconds shifts me into work mode. The neighbour disappears. The lyrics don't exist.

When this fails

  • You keep switching. The whole point is the sameness. If you go looking for "the perfect playlist" every session, you've just invented a new procrastination.
  • The music is too good. Music you love is distracting because you want to listen to it. Boring is the feature.
  • You only use it during work. If you also play it while cooking, scrolling, etc., it stops being a cue. Reserve it for focus, always.

Try it this week

Pick one piece of music or noise track. Use it only during focused work for a week. Don't switch. Notice whether the start of the track starts to feel like work mode by day three or four.
