What it is
Boring life admin (taxes, forms, bills, calls, claims, paperwork) is the single category most ADHD brains find hardest, and it accumulates faster than any other. The Boring Things Batch is the practice of doing all of it in one dedicated session per week or month. Instead of letting each task fail individually.
You don't make admin fun. You make it bounded. Two hours, then it's over, regardless of what's left.
When to use it
- You have a graveyard of half-done forms, unopened mail, and unresponded-to bills
- You keep "meaning to deal with it" and never do
- Specific tasks (tax, claim, government form) have been sitting for months
- The accumulating weight is starting to affect your sleep
How to do it
- Schedule a recurring slot. Two hours, every Sunday, or every other Saturday. Whatever works. Same time, same place. It needs to be on the calendar.
- Brain dump the admin list first. Five minutes. Write down every overdue/boring thing. Don't sort yet.
- Pick the top 3 most overdue. Not the easiest. The ones that would feel best to have done.
- Pair with a body double if needed. Boring admin is the prime use case for body doubling. A Focusmate session or a friend on video.
- Hard stop at the end of the slot. Even if there's more. Even if you're on a roll. Stopping at the slot builds trust with yourself that the session won't expand into your whole day.
- Reward. Something concrete and consistent. A favourite meal, a walk, a good show. The reward is part of the technique. Your brain remembers.
An example
I had eleven months of personal admin backed up. Insurance claims, a tax document, three forms for my kid's school, two voicemails I'd never returned.
Saturday 9–11am became Admin Time. Two hours. Coffee, body double on Focusmate, list in front of me. Worked through the top 3 each session. Pizza after.
Six sessions in (so 12 hours total over six weeks), the backlog was gone. New admin still arrives but the weekly slot eats it before it accumulates.
When this fails
- The slot is movable. "I'll do it Sunday" with no fixed time means you won't. Pin it.
- You try to do all the admin, every session. You can't, and the failure feels worse. Three things a session is enough.
- There's no reward. Without a payoff, your brain learns "admin time means suffering." With a reward, it learns "admin time means pizza."
Try it this week
Pick a 2-hour slot in the next 7 days. Put it in your calendar. Brain dump your admin list now (so you can't forget anything during the session). Show up. Pizza after.
