What it is
ADHD brains struggle with task switching in a particular way: the previous task keeps bleeding into the new one, and you can't get traction on the next thing because half your mind is still on the last. A transition ritual is a short, deliberate sequence between tasks that closes the previous one and opens the next.
It's like clearing your desk before a new project, but it's a habit, not a chore.
When to use it
- You finish a meeting and can't get back into focused work afterwards
- You move between tasks and feel scattered for 20 minutes after each switch
- The end of your work day bleeds into your evening (or vice versa)
- Hyperfocusing on one thing leaves no room for the next
How to do it
A transition ritual should take two to five minutes, no longer. Examples:
- The walk-around. Stand up, walk to a different room, look out a window for 30 seconds, walk back.
- The closing notes. Open the document or task you just finished. Write one sentence about where you stopped and what comes next. Close it.
- The water + breath. Drink a full glass of water. Take three slow breaths. Notice what's in front of you.
- The desk reset. Put away anything related to the previous task. Open only what's needed for the next.
Same ritual, every transition. Same logic as a pre-task ritual. Repetition makes it a cue.
An example
I used to come out of meetings and stare at my screen for 15–20 minutes before I could focus. I'd just sit there, half-thinking about the meeting, half-trying to start work.
Started a 3-minute ritual after every meeting: stand up, walk to the kitchen, fill water bottle, return, write one sentence about what I'm working on next. Three minutes.
The 20-minute zombie window disappeared. The ritual was the recovery.
When this fails
- You don't actually transition. You scroll. Picking up your phone after a task is not a transition. It's a new (worse) task.
- You don't have a ritual, just "a break." Unstructured breaks expand. Five minutes becomes forty. A ritual has clear edges.
- You skip it on busy days. Busy days are when you need it most. Skip the ritual and you'll spend more total time being scattered than the ritual would have cost.
Try it this week
Pick one transition you find hard (meeting → work, work → home, etc.). Design a 3-step ritual. Do it every time that transition happens this week. Notice whether the next task starts faster.
